Sophia Knapp is a psychedelic pop musician living in Los Angeles, CA, with San Francisco and Brooklyn roots. She is known for her seductively cool voice, diverse musical influences, and otherworldly presence.
Sophia started off in the mid-2000s playing guitar and singing in Lights, Brooklyn-based psych rock duo with drummer/singer Linnea Vedder. The band released two full-length albums and toured the US and the UK before changing their name to Cliffie Swan in 2010 and releasing another LP, Memories Come True.
Knapp’s first solo outing, in 2011 on Drag City, was a 7” single, Nothing To Lose, with Caroline Polachek of Chairlift providing a remix for the b-side. The following year, Sophia’s debut LP Into The Waves was released on Drag City to critical acclaim. The record was co-produced by Eric Gorman and film composer Jay Israelson, and features two duets with labelmate Bill Callahan. Sophia toured with Bill Callahan, and supported Destroyer, Au Revoir Simone, Jim Jarmusch + Josef Van Wissem, and Nite Jewel. Additionally, Sophia toured Sweden and Brazil in 2012, and participated in a multi-disciplinary artist residency outside Rio de Janeiro.
2013 so far has seen the release of two new tracks for Record Store Day, written in collaboration with Swedish pop duo AOP (feat members of Dungen and Life On Earth) and released on 7” by Electric Ragtime.
Sophia is currently working on her second album.
